Childcare workers protested in front of Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi’s office on Catherine Street Monday afternoon against a new daycare bill that would introduce more restrictions to the service.
If passed, Bill 10 would ban unlicensed childcare providers from taking care of more than two children under the age of two and would allow no more than five children at a daycare.
The bill would increase childcare costs by 30 to 40 per cent, in addition to cutting 140,000 spaces, according to the Coalition of Independent Childcare Providers of Ontario.
In an official statement, Naqvi said he was “pleased to have the opportunity…to meet with childcare providers and parents to talk about how we modernize our childcare system.”
Today’s protest followed a series of demonstrations against Bill 10 that took place late last month in 11 cities across Ontario.
