Popular politico hang out, Hy’s Steakhouse, will close its doors for good in February.
The restaurant, located steps from Parliament Hill, was a key part of politics in Ottawa.
“I think the democratic process needs a place where people can meet, where journalists can meet politicians, politicians can meet other politicians from different parties,” said former broadcaster Don Newman.
In the 30 years it has been in Ottawa, Hy’s Steakhouse has been a home to shop talk and casual gatherings between Members of Parliament, journalists, and lobbyists. It is and was often frequented by high profile politicians, such as Jean Chrétien, Jack Layton and a number of ministers.
According to Hy’s spokesperson Karyn Byrne, they were unable to reach an agreement with their landlord and will be leaving in February when their lease is up. There are no plans to open another Hy’s Steakhouse in Ottawa.
The company is celebrating their 60thanniversary this fall.
For Ottawa patrons, this celebration could very well be their last.
“We hope to see many of our Hy’s guests over the coming months before our final service,” said Byrne.
