After four days of advance polling, Ottawa Centre had the highest voter turnout in Canada in this year’s federal election.
Advance polls were open from Oct. 9 to 12, and saw a 71% increase in voter turnout from 2011 numbers. An estimated 3.6 million Canadians voted at advance polls this year, a marked increase from 2.1 million in 2011.
Elections Canada saw record-breaking numbers on Friday, October 9 and Monday, October 12, with 850,000 and 1.2 million Canadians turning out to vote respectively.
While the increase is substantial, it’s partly a result of the addition of Sunday as an advance-voting day, which has never been offered before.
According to numbers from Elections Canada, Ottawa Centre – which includes Centretown – beat Orléans for the highest advance voter turnout by just 10 votes, with 18,751 voters showing up at the Ottawa Centre polls.
The Elections Canada website shows that Ottawa Centre has 91,625 eligible voters on its official list.
Final results of the 42nd Canadian general election will be determined on October 19, Election Day.
