Dec. 7

Austria’s celebrated moderntimes_1800 will perform for the first time in Ottawa at 8 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 82 Kent St., as part of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society’s 2007-08 concert series. Entitled Bach and beyond . . . the program includes concertos by Bach performed on Baroque instruments and Schnittke’s piano quinted performed on modern instruments. Admission is $30 for adults and $15 for students.

Dec. 8

Canterbury High School, 900 Canterbury Ave., presents its annual Children’s Theatre Festival at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. On the program are three plays: Greedy Guts, One Thousand Cranes and Aladdin. All area children are welcome. Admission is free but donations are encouraged.

Dec. 9

Glebe St. James Church, 650 Lyon St., presents Heather Dale at 7 p.m. Dale brings her lively Celtic/folk music back to Ottawa. Dale and her partner play more than a dozen different folk instruments and offer a great mix of original and traditional Christmas songs. Admission is $12 for aduts and $6 for seniors and children.

Dec. 11

John Watson, a Senior Fellow at the Munk Centre, University of Toronto, and former executive director of CARE Canada, will give a lecture entitled A New Leviathon – Afghanistan in Hisotrical Context? at First Unitarian Church, 30 Cleary Ave., at 7:30 p.m. One in a series in honour of peace activist Edith Holton.

Volunteers are needed immediately for the coffee kiosk at the new Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, Carling at Merivale. The auxiliary of the Ottawa Humane Society meets at 1:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Real Canadian Superstore, 190 Richmond Rd. New members are welcome. The auxiliary raises money for animals at the shelter and has a very active craft circle. For more information call Diane Bartlett-Fraser at 613-836-1492.

The Good Companions Centre has an interesting variety of volunteer opportunities: dining room server, cashier, receptionist, telephone receptionist. The centre needs active caring people who are able to volunteer during the day or on weekdays and who would help seniors enjoy the programs the centre offers. The centre is located at 670 Albert St. on major bus routes and there is a parking lot next to the building. Would you join the centre’s volunteer team?
