Ottawa cyclists will have to wait until the fall for a lane of their own. The city’s segregated bike lane pilot project, originally scheduled for this summer, has been delayed by city council in order to allow for more public consultation.
Somerset Ward Coun. Diane Holmes’ motion to put the brakes on the project and immediately set up an advisory committee was approved by the city’s transportation committee.
Holmes says that the project is important to the city and it can’t risk its failure by ignoring public concerns such as elimination of parking, turning two-way streets to one-ways, and the width of lanes.
The proposed route would run across Centretown from Preston Street to Elgin Street.
The transportation committee also passed a motion asking the city to create more pilot projects for segregated bike lanes in other parts of the city.
