While some Maiden fans were disappointed because the band mostly played songs from their new album, the band whipped the crowd into frenzies with the several classics they did include.

The scorching temperatures didn't keep Ottawa from pouring onto LeBreton Flats to mark the beginning of the 16th Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest.

Organizers estimate that over 30,000 people turned up in the 34 degree Celsius weather to watch the headlining bands Dream Theater, and Iron Maiden, among others.

This represents a 10 per cent increase from last year's opening night.

OC Transpo increased the frequency of the O-Train and has extended its hours to accomodate the increase in ridership although a spokesman said he could not estimate how many extra passengers would use the service.

Also, concert goers needn't worried about being gauged by typical concert water prices because there is a convenient water bottle refilling station.

Bluesfest has grown to become one of the biggest music festivals in North America with more than 220 musical acts, more than 60 of which are from the Ottawa area.

The event runs from July 6-18.
