Somerset Ward candidate Don Fex and mayoral candidate Charlie Taylor met with students, Wednesday morning, in an effort to encourage young people to vote in the upcoming election.
Both candidates said they are targeting voters under the age of 40. This is particularly important for Somerset, said Fex, because so many of its residents are young renters.
If both are elected, Fex and Taylor said they are willing to work together on issues they feel are important to young people such as cycling, the arts and downtown renewal.
They met students on the Corktown Footbridge, Wednesday, near the University of Ottawa.
“It was really good, we handed out about 250-300 cards and had some great conversations,” said Fex.
According to Taylor, a lot of students don't know that they are eligible to vote in this election. “(They) are not aware that they can vote in this election even if they only live in Ottawa during the school year,” said Taylor.
Fex said university students should vote because many are in Ottawa for at least four years, which he said is enough time to influence city council’s decisions.
The second round of advanced polls is on Thursday.
