Centretown athlete wins Taekwon-do championship

Centretown’s own Miro Mostovac took home three gold medals at last weekend’s Canadian Taekwon-do Federation International national championship in Vancouver.

The 21-year-old Carleton student placed first in three categories: patterns first degree men, sparring heavyweight men and special technique. His performance qualifies him to represent Canada at the 2011 International Taekwon-do Federation world championships in New Zealand.

“The training paid off and I’m glad I did well,” he said. “There’s some growth there (but) it was my day . . .  everything worked out well.”

Mostovac said the tournament, held at the Richmond Olympic Oval, was a breathtaking experience. The atmosphere of the venue, he said, really put the event in perspective.

“Stepping into the oval was amazing. We were competing in the same place they held the speed skating competition in the Olympics,” he said. “The layout of mats and barriers really justified it as a national championship.”

He said people from all over the country turned out. There was particularly high attendance from British Columbia, as well as Quebec and Nova Scotia.
