The Chinatown Gateway Arch on Somerset Street has been named the Public Works 2011 Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association.
The arch, built in 2010, was designed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Canada-China diplomatic relations. The design features conceptual work, finishing, decorative materials and conceptual work was provided by the City of Beijing.
Structurally, it acts as an imperial gateway to Chinatown. Traditional artisans and technicians assembled the panels, roof sections as well as painted the gateway.
Somerset Ward councillor, Diane Holmes, said project is a product of collaboration and community support.
“It is a shining example of what can be achieved when the city works with other levels of government, the private sector, residents and community groups,” said Holmes.
The three levels of Canadian government, the City of Beijing as well as the Chinatown BIA funded the project through corporate and private donations.
