Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi, passed over for a ministerial post, will serve as parliamentary assistant to the finance minister – a lateral move for the young Liberal politician, winner of back-to-back election contests.
Naqvi, who handily reclaimed the riding in October’s vote, was most recently parliamentary assistant to former education minister Leona Dombrowsky until the legislature was dissolved for the election.
Now, Naqvi will be aiding Finance Minister Dwight Duncan, mainly by filling in for Duncan during Queen’s Park debates when the minister is away, Naqvi's office said in a news release Wednesday night.
Naqvi, who is also Liberal Party president, also filled the same role for the minister of community safety and revenue minister during his first term in office.
He will be returning to a supporting role in Premier Dalton McGuinty’s cabinet as chair of its management board.
