For the first time in the school’s history, the Glashan Public School’s boys and girls volleyball teams both won the gold cup in the annual provincial cup volleyball championship.
Forty-eight schools from across Ontario participated in the event this weekend, said Murat Erlik, the coach for the boy’s team.
Erlik compares the championship to an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations, better known as OFSAA, competition, but at an elementary school level.
Glashan, located on Arlington Avenue, has had success in the tournament in the past. Erlik said the boys have won the gold cup 11 times, and this is the girls’ second win.
But this is only the second time in the 32 years of the event that a boys and girls team from the same school has won the championship and it is something to be proud of, Erlik said.
“We’re a school of 300 students for Grades 7 to 8, and competing against these ginormous schools in the GTA is a huge accomplishment for us,” he added.
