The senior boys’ soccer team from Lisgar Collegiate Institute kept its playoff hopes alive by shutting out Glebe Collegiate Institute 4-0 on Friday.
In order to make it to the league playoffs to compete for the National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association (NCSSAA) championship, Lisgar now needs two things to happen. First, the team needs to win its final game of the season against Orleans high school Beatrice-Desloges on Tuesday. Secondly, St. Patrick’s High School must tie or lose its last game in order for Lisgar to advance.
Scoring for Lisgar against Glebe were Jeffery Pike, Bernard Mendis, Fuad Ahad, and Lionel Scott-Hartson.
Lisgar coach Colin Findlater said he was happy to see these boys scoring because they are not normally the top marksmen on the team.
Tyvon Greene, a senior student who is in his fourth year with the Lisgar team, said he felt the team come together in the game.
“Today was probably our best game; we really gelled as a team,” said Greene. “We communicated well, we did crosses in. I think it was definitely the best game I’ve seen us play in a long time.”
Another senior player, Pablo Srugo, said he believes the team has a strong chance to move on to the playoffs.
He said if the team continues playing strong, finishing plays and controlling the ball, it should have no problem winning on Tuesday.
Findlater said he is confident about a win on Tuesday, especially since Beatrice-Desloges is coming off a 4-0 loss in its last game.
Findlater said the Glebe game was great to watch because he saw 11 players competing as one.
“At the end of the day it was a good team win, because the confidence of the team was starting to come back,” said Findlater.
Lisgar plays in the tier 1, AAA to AAAA division. Teams are classed according to the size of the school and the team’s skill level.
