Cyclists rode through the downtown core Thursday to honour Danielle Naçu on the one-year anniversary of her death.
Naçu, an avid cyclist and government employee, was killed when she was knocked into oncoming traffic by an opening car door the morning of Oct. 11, 2011.
About 100 cyclists and pedestrians gathered at Sparks and O’Connor streets at 11:30 a.m. They stopped for a moment of silence at the white “ghost bike” on Queen Street – the site where Naçu was hit. Many of Naçu’s family and friends took part in the memorial ride.
The group travelled to city hall where Mayor Jim Watson announced a new bike safety awareness campaign in partnership with the Canadian Automobile Association. Drivers can pick up car mirror stickers – available at city hall and CAA locations – that say Watch for Bikes.
Today marked the second tribute ride for Danielle Naçu. Just days after her death, cyclists took to the downtown streets to pay tribute to her memory.
