Re: Tree planting addresses lack of green space, Nov. 7
I read with interest the article by Alexandra Reid about the city's tree planting in Centretown to address the lack of green space.
While I believe the city's intentions are truly honourable, the execution of their tree planting leaves much to be desired. If there were a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Trees, the City would be in deep trouble.
The sidewalks of many downtown streets, where the city has spent thousands of dollars planting trees, are decorated with holes nicely framed by bricks or grates where trees were planted and died from neglect.
Some time ago I suggested that there needed to be a budget for tree maintenance. It appears that my suggestion may have fallen into one of the tree holes.
It is a waste of taxpayers dollars to plant trees without a plan to maintain them. We cannot afford to be doing that given the financial crunch.
