Officer cleared by SIU after pedestrians hit

An Ottawa police officer who struck two people with her police vehicle last month at Elgin and Sparks streets has been cleared of wrongdoing by the Special Investigations Unit.

The two were struck by the marked police cruiser while crossing the street. According to the SIU, the police car was moving southbound through a green light when the two pedestrians were struck.

A 73-year-old woman had serious injuries including a fractured arm, and a 48-year-old man sustained a concussion, according to a SIU press release.

“In these circumstances, I am satisfied on reasonable grounds that the officer exercised a level of care that fell within the limits prescribed by the criminal law,” says acting director Joseph Martino in the release.

The SIU is currently conducting two other investigations into Ottawa Police Service conduct, says a spokesperson for the unit.

The SIU is called in to investigate in the event of a death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault that involves a police officer.
