Man charged after suspicious package closes down PMO

The RCMP have charged a Toronto man in connection with a suspicious package left at Langevin Block that led to the evacuation and closure of several blocks of downtown Ottawa office buildings Wednesday.

Mohamoud Jimale, 45, of Toronto, Ont., has been charged with one count of uttering threats as well as mischief. He is scheduled to appear in Ontario Provincial Court Thursday.

Langevin Block, which houses the Prime Minister’s Office and Privy Council Office, was evacuated along with nearby businesses Wednesday as a joint RCMP and Ottawa Police bomb disposal squad used a robot to examine the package.

Police deemed the package safe around 3 p.m., less than two hours before the Governor General was scheduled to deliver the throne speech on Parliament Hill, just across the street.
