A First Nations demonstration is now on Parliament Hill, ending a warning for potential traffic disruptions in downtown Ottawa Thursday evening, police report.
The march appears to be a response to violence that erupted between New Brunswick RCMP and the Elsipogtog First Nation after a blockade of SWN Resources Canada to prevent seismic testing for shale gas.
The demonstration began at the Human Rights Monument on Elgin Street and made its way to Parliament Hill. Police say the march was not planned, so there was no official route.
There was police presence accompanying the marchers to direct traffic and ensure public safety, a police spokesperson said.
There are similar demonstration that will occur across the country Thursday and Friday, according to social media sources.
