Rachel Homan and her Ottawa rink captured their second consecutive Canadian women’s curling championship Sunday with an 8-6 win over Team Alberta in the final.
After Homan successfully drew for three points in the second end as skip with the hammer, both teams traded smaller scores each end for the rest of the way through the final, finishing with a Homan takeout in the tenth end to secure the win.
Homan’s rink, consisting of lead Lisa Weagle, second Alison Kreviazuk, third Emma Miskew, and coach Earle Morris, curls out of the Ottawa Curling Club.
However, the team was playing as Team Canada in the event because they were defending national champions.
The team was even more successful this time around, going an perfect 13-0 throughout the tournament.
It was the first time since 1985 a team had an undefeated record at the tournament.
The Ottawa-based team will once again represent Canada at the upcoming women’s world championships in Saint John, N.B., this March.
The team will look to improve on last year’s debut result at the world championships, where it placed third and brought home a bronze medal.
The tournament win for Homan’s rink also came on the heels of them losing in the semifinal of the Canadian Olympic curling trials.
