Ottawa police warn residents to avoid thawing ice

Thin ice on Ottawa’s Rideau River.
While most residents are celebrating warmer temperatures, the Ottawa police are warning of the dangers the melting snow and ice can cause.

Thinning ice on open bodies of water, such as ponds or rivers, increases the risk of falling through and can result in hypothermia, and harder swimming conditions due to cold water.

Police have also advised snowmobilers to use extra caution when riding near water or thin ice, especially after dark.

They remind everyone to remain vigilant when travelling near waterways, as temperatures in Ottawa are expected to further increase this week.
