NCC plan dead on arrival

Just when we thought the National Capital Commission’s idea of creating a grand boulevard leading up to Parliament Hill by widening Metcalfe Street was dead, someone removed the “do not resuscitate” order.

Last February the NCC dropped its outlandish plan after vehement objection from concerned businesses, municipal politicians and urban planners. But it appears the NCC hasn’t forgotten the idea. read more

Gender-neutral Jesus

The United Church is swinging a sabre of couched words and obliterating gender in its new book of prayer in an effort to accomplish . . . . Who knows what they’re trying to accomplish.

The new, “modern” book of prayer is the religious equivalent of Y2K debugging. It seems the United Church is terrified that some poor minister will come to the end of the wedding vows, look from the freshly shaven face of the groom to the freshly shaven face of the other groom, and grind to an abrupt halt at “I now pronounce you husband and . . . .” read more

OC and the elderly

OC Transpo has been trying to increase ridership over the last few months. This being the international year of the older person, many of those efforts have focused on senior citizens.

For instance, it has cut the price of a monthly bus pass for seniors and is phasing in new lower-floored buses. Not only is this last initiative good for seniors, as it makes the system more accessible, it also saves OC Transpo money. The newer buses have lower maintenance costs, and the fact that they have no stairs means fewer boarding delays and faster service for everyone. read more
