After years of controversy and numerous proposals, work has finally begun on the redevelopment of the Sparks Street area by the National Capital Commission.
With over $75 million worth of funding cuts to city services on the way, area residents and some city councillors are upset about proposed plans for the construction of a $4.8-million pedestrian bridge over the Rideau Canal at Somerset Street West.
The city budget cuts to OC Transpo might actually end up costing more money as seniors in Centretown may have to turn to Para Transpo because of cuts to the No. 6 bus route.
The city is proposing to re-introduce development fees that could affect an affordable housing project scheduled to begin this fall on Somerset Street West.
