Bronson Centre solution

I want to congratulate Irek Kusmierczyk for his coverage of developments at the Bronson Centre building last fall.

After three months of hard work and hundreds of volunteer hours, those dedicated to preserving the vision of an empowered Bronson Centre community are more determined than ever to see this dream become a reality. There are those with the skills and determination to make it happen, but they are being held back by structure. read more

Clarifying labour unrest at Catholic school board

In your latest issue of Centretown News you printed a story about the labour unrest at the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic School Board. As President of C.U.P.E. Local 2357, I would like to clarify two issues.

Firstly, as to leave, we are struggling to maintain the leave that we have had for many years and harmonize that leave between the Ottawa and Carleton sectors. At present, there are two different contracts serving the support employees and they need to be merged. read more

Letter for November 12, 1999

Counsellor’s comment ‘unfortunate’

I would like to respond to, and perhaps clarify, some of the unfortunate comments made by Geoff Coons, a counsellor with the Youth 2000 Jobs program in the October 15 edition of your paper.

The Youth 2000 Jobs program, which employs two front line counsellors, was barely seven months old at the time of the interview. In those months, the staff was able to secure jobs for over 100 youth. read more

I am writing in reference to your article dated Oct. 1, “Gladstone properties to house the homeless.”
It disturbs me as to why Gord Hunter thinks “the idea is looney.”

So what if the properties are not sold at market value? I guess he thinks the families who will move into these shelters will be paying nothing to house them. Think again. read more
