Snow and ice fest features snow-free South American country

Welcome to the Andes – Ottawa style.

La Nina promises cold weather and ample snow for Winterlude 1999, but the international component of the festival will feature a virtually snow-free country.

Chile runs half the length of the South American Pacific coast, from Peru to the lower tip of the continent. It has a thin profile thanks to the Andes Mountains, which hug almost the entire length of the country’s right flank, but you might have to climb the peaks to catch a snowflake on your tongue. read more

Ottawa Centre tories ready to unveil ‘mystery’ candidate

Ottawa Centre Conservatives will reveal the identity of their “high-profile” mystery candidate for the next provincial election by the end of the month.

In December, Barbara Corkum, president of the Ottawa Centre tory riding association, said a “high-profile” candidate would be revealed that month. But the announcement was never made and Corkum now says a candidate will be announced at the end of January. read more

Carleton’s football alumni responds to possible sacking

Like the Ravens wide receivers in recent years, Carleton University’s football alumni might not be able to hustle quite fast enough to keep football at the university.

Time is ticking on the team, since Carleton’s director of athletics Drew Love recommended it be axed in a Jan. 7 report. The department is seeking public input until Jan. 29, and Carleton president Richard Van Loon will decide the team’s fate in mid-February. read more
