Local skater taking championship risks

In the high-pressure world of competitive sports, there is an unspoken belief that athletes who haven’t “made it” by the time they’re 20 years old won’t make it at all.

Derek Schmidt, 24, hopes to lay that theory to rest.

Schmidt, an Ottawa resident, has been figure skating for 15 years and competing at the senior level for three. In a sport typically reserved for teenagers, it’s rare to find skaters like Schmidt who have not fared well at the amateur level still competing past their 20s. read more

Take it to the Bank: St. Pat’s parade gets new route

Not everybody likes a parade. Merchants in Centretown and the Glebe are preparing for the mixed blessings associated with an additional parade down Bank Street.

The 17th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade will follow a new route this year. The change came about after the regional government enacted a by-law last year that prevents parades from crossing the Rideau canal. read more

Health centre plans laundromat for low-income residents

Hot on the heels of a poverty awareness campaign, the Centretown Community Health Centre leads a plan to create the first-ever laundry co-operative for low-income people in Centretown.

In collaboration with McLeod-Stewarton United Church, First United Church and others, the health centre last year tackled the problems facing the 120,000 people in Ottawa-Carleton who live below the poverty line. read more
