Photo Essay: Fine Tuned

Image Located on the upper floor of an unassuming house at 792 Gladstone Ave., the afternoon sunlight catches the flames of carved and polished wood. Bent over their work, a pair work tirelessly at creating new violins and repairing old ones.

That pair is Guy Harrison and his assistant, Charline Dequincey. Harrison, a well-known Centretown luthier, discovered his trade and passion when he was 13 years old and living in Australia.

He would eventually move to England, where he trained for three years at the Newark School of Violin Making, later apprenticing with other violin makers in Europe before practicing his trade on a third continent.

 Harrison settled in Ottawa where he opened his own studio to build and repair violins, violas and cellos.

Harrison welcomed Centretown News photographers into his workplace to talk about his centuries-old trade. Aside from better glue and gentler clamps, he talked about what has changed in violin making over the years and, more interestingly, what has remained the same.

A young skater takes advantage of free skating lessons on the canal on Saturday

The opening of Ottawa's 33rd Winterlude kicked off on Friday, Feb 4 with good weather all weekend. Crowds of all ages skated the Rideau Canal enjoying Beaver tails and hot chocolate. Some up-coming activities include ice sculpture competitions, Aboriginal story telling and the Beaver Cup pond hockey championship. The event runs until Feb 21. read more

Photo Gallery: Chili cook-off a success, despite chilly weather

Head chef Dave Gower of Lieutenant's Pump won the first ever Sens Mile Charity Chili Cook-Off Sunday Jan 16. Recipes by 10 competing restaurants were tasted and judged by local celebrities including Mayor Jim Watson, Fire Chief John deHooge, Deputy Police Chief Charles Bordeleau and Councillor Diane Holmes. All proceeds from the day's events were put toward the Jack Purcell Park Redevelopment Project, which aims to build the first accesible play area for children of all abilities and ages in downtown Ottawa. read more
