Like the guards that practise inside it, the Cartier Square Drill Hall stands at attention between the Queen Elizabeth Drive and city hall. Moving cars speed past on one side, but the hall seems stopped in time, mid motion. It sits on edge, waiting. Waiting to train more men and women. Waiting for them to come home.
Located in a valley tucked between Parliament Hill and the Chateau Laurier hotel, the Bytown Museum looks out onto the Ottawa River from the first lock of the Rideau Canal.
The building currently known as Barrymore’s originally opened in 1914 as the Imperial Theatre. Located at 323 Bank St., between MacLaren and Gilmour streets, the theatre lasted for nearly four decades as one of the city’s premier movie theatres, featuring a balcony seating more than 200 people and box seats for another 100 patrons.
With a prolonged history and fascinating design, the Bank of Canada building stands as one of Ottawa’s most distinctive and architecturally noteworthy structures.
