Light rail gets green light from Region

Light rail will be a reality in Ottawa-Carleton, starting in 2001.

Regional council approved a two-year pilot project costing almost $17 million. The trains will run along an existing track streching from Greenboro Transitway station to Lebreton Flats, with passenger stations at Heron Road, Carleton University, and Carling Avenue.

OC Transpo hopes the new service will attract more passengers to public transit. The decision marks an end to two years of heated debate by regional councillors. Opponents of light rail believe the money would be better spent improving bus service.
