Nov. 13

The Ottawa Youth Orchestra will present a concert at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Ottawa Technical Learning Centre (formerly McArthur High School), 485 Donald St. The OYO concertmaster, Yolanda Bruno, and assistant concertmaster, Sarah Williams, are the featured soloists in Bach’s concerto in D minor for two violins. Antoine Malette-Chénier is among the many soloists in the Sleeping Beauty Suite and Capriccio Espagnol. Other composers featured include Schubert and Rossini. Tickets will be available at the door for $12, and $7 for seniors and students, and $5 for children, or $30 subscription to the 3-concert OYO series.

To mark the 20th anniversary of National Philanthropy Day, the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will be holding the 11th Annual Ottawa Philanthropy Awards. The event will be held at the National Gallery on Sussex Drive, to recognize volunteers, fundraisers and leaders in the community. The keynote speaker will be Frank O’Dea, founder of Second Cup. There will be a benefit play performance on behalf of local charity Friends of Abandoned Pets (FOAP) at the Ottawa Little Theatre, 400 King Edward Avenue, at 2 p.m. The play is “Widowers’ Houses” by George Bernard Shaw. The Ottawa Welsh Coral Society presents a concert of Christmas carols in Welsh, English and French at 7:30 p.m. at Bromley Road Baptist Church, 1900 Lauder Dr. Admission at the door is $15.

Dec. 2

Canadian Amateur Musicians’ Come Sing Messiah! will take place at Dominion Chalmers United Church, O’Connor at Cooper Street. Join more than 1,000 singers and listeners for a participatory version of Handel’s Messiah. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the rehearsal at 6 p.m. and performance at 8 p.m. Singers should bring their own music. In Centretown, tickets are available starting Nov. 12 at Book Bazaar, 417 Bank. The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers for its Christmas Kettle Campaign from Nov. 24 until Dec. 24. The volunteers will stand at a Cheer Kettle that will be located at all major shopping centres and retail outlets. This year’s goal is $375,000.
