Centretown, you’re no Manhattan

Re: Manhattan, eat your heart out, Dec. 8

I spent the whole second week of past August in Manhattan. I am wondering just how recently Jenny Wagler was there.

Everything she mentioned in her story regarding food and drink was readily accessible to me at all hours, day or night.

That city never sleeps; quite unlike Ottawa where the sidewalks are rolled up quite early, even on weekends.

Best of all, and unlike Ottawa, not one street person approached me bumming for money or trying to sell me something.

Upon speaking to a NYPD policeman, he informed that the mentally ill and the drug abusers had been placed in hospitals and rehabilitation centres.

Please excuse my digression as Ms. Wagler wrote only about accessible food and drink; however, with no mention whatsoever of security and safety within the area.

I personally will not walk around Centretown, or those two above-mentioned areas, alone, in the wee hours of the night. I used to years ago, but not anymore – read the papers.

I did do just that however, in upper and lower Manhattan and nobody bothered me.

In fact, a lot of people were walking about, finding food, drink and entertainment. Taxis galore if one wished to ride.

A very safe and secure city.

Wring your own hands, Jenny Wagler and lay your head, Centretown; you’re no Manhattan.

Gerald Hebert,

Wurtemburg Street

Editor’s note: Ms Wagler was being facetious.
