Concert hall funding deadline extended

The deadline to get federal funding for the proposed Elgin Street concert hall has been extended to Nov. 30.

A city council committee granted the extension to supporters of the project, which is expected to cost $27 million. If federal funding is not obtained by the deadline, the city will withdraw the $12 million it has pledged.

Although some city councillors expressed concern over the length of time to get federal funding, the hall’s supporters say they believe the city’s continued commitment will assist them in obtaining federal funding.

A decision is expected by the summer.

Provincial NDP sets date for nomination meeting

Ottawa Centre NDPers will nominate their candidate for the Oct. 10 provincial election on March 1.

Seeking the nomination are Jeff Atkinson, the party’s candidate in the riding in 2003, and lawyer Will Murray.

The meeting will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 330 Kent St., at 7 p.m.

The provincial vote was originally set for Oct. 4 but was pushed back because it conflicted with a Jewish holiday.

Legislation passed in December 2005 fixed the election to the first Thursday in October every four years.

But the date can be moved to any of the next seven days if it is found to conflict with a religious or culturally significant day.
