Letter: Vertical neighbourhoods

I moved here from a vertical neighbourhood (central Toronto) to Ottawa 10 years ago.

Since moving here I have experienced higher crime, several friends who’ve been struck by vehicles flying off the nearby Queensway, and a principal shopping street (Bank) full of crime, drugs, and thugs – that’s at the best of times, when the street is actually open.

This neighbourhood suffers greatly because density is no longer sufficient to support decent services.

So you can draw your own conclusions on what some downtowners like me think of more people moving to the area (new condos).

Those who don’t want new construction (or construction that no developer can afford because you can’t make it in central Ottawa by building low-rise) can move to the suburbs and stop interfering with the lives of those who prefer an urban lifestyle – and that’s called a vertical neighbourhood.
