City council to decide pro-atheist ad issue

City councillors will be asked next week to rule on whether ads that carry a pro-atheist message should be allowed on city buses after a transport committee meeting failed to reach a decision.

The Free Thought Association of Canada wants to buy advertising that with a message saying “There is probably no god. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”

The ads were initially turned down by OC Transpo after the organization received four complaints. The issue was brought before council’s transport committee Wednesday by chair Alex Cullen, who wanted to decision reversed, feeling that the refusal amounted to censorship.

The committee, however, deadlocked in a tie vote and Cullen announced he would bring the matter to the full council next Wednesday as a notice of motion. Councillors are expected to decide the issue in March.
