Centretown school raises funds for family after fire destroys home

Students and staff at Elgin Street Public School have started raising money for a family left without clothing, food and a home after a Mann Avenue fire on Jan. 23.

The Neverson Family Fire Relief is accepting donations for the Neverson family, whose daughter attends the school, and who have no insurance.

The fire was reported to have started on a balcony of the three-storey apartment building. The fire completely gutted two units on the top floor of the building, and left four other units on the first and second floors damaged with water and smoke.

Twenty-eight people were displaced, and only one of the eight families affected had insurance.

Another fundraiser has been started by the Action Sandy Hill community organization, who is seeking to collect food, clothing, school supplies, bedding and kitchen supplies for families affected by the fire.
