Ottawa native comes fifth in figure skating

Ottawa native Patrick Chan finished fifth overall last night at the men’s figure skating finals at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter games.

Nineteen-year old Chan earned a seventh place finish in the men’s short program with a total of 81.12 points on Tuesday. He ranked fourth at last night’s free skating program, with a total of 160.30 points, to earn a combined total of 241.24 points for the fifth place finish.

Chan was born in Ottawa and later grew up in Toronto, where he currently lives. He began figure skating at the age of five and since earned many medals for his accomplishments on the ice, including a silver medal at the 2009 World Championships and the title of Canadian champion in  2008-2009. As of January, Chan was ranked ninth in the world.
