Gladstone Theatre garners Rideau Awards nominations

Nominees for the third annual Rideau Awards, which celebrate professional theatre in Ottawa and Gatineau, were announced today and include two nominations from Centretown’s Gladstone Theatre.

For outstanding set design, Ivo Valentik has been nominated for his work in The Final Twist, while Sean Green and Tina Goralski were nominated for the outstanding stage management/technical award for Noises Off.

Another seven nominations, including Margo MacDonald, for outstanding performance by a female, were awarded to a play performed at the Gladstone Theatre by A Company of Fools called A Midwinter’s Dream Tale.

For the first time this year, the awards will be fully bilingual, to honour English and French productions. A group of 24 local arts professionals juried the 40 English and 11 French theatres included in the competition.

“We have two juries who go and see shows – an English and French jury,” said Judi Pearl, chair of the Rideau Awards steering committee. “Companies that wish to be considered for the award have to make a submission. The shows are then seen by the jury and the jurors vote by secret ballot, then the votes are counted by accounting firm.”

Awards will be presented at a ceremony on April 18.
