Ottawa’s most succesful Olympian finished in sixth place at the ladies’ 5000 metres race at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games yesterday morning.
Speed skater Kristina Groves had a completed the event with a time of seven minutes, 4:47, a 13:66 second difference behind the Czech Republic’s Martina Sabilkova, who earned the gold medal.
Germany’s Stephanie Beckert took the silver with a time of six minutes, 51:39, and Canadian skater Clara Hughes took bronze with a time of six minutes, 55:73.
Groves has become the most successful Olympian from Ottawa with four medals over two winter games.
She earned a silver medal in the ladies’ 1,500 metres speed skating race and a bronze at the ladies’ 3,000 metres race last week.
Groves previously earned two silver medals at the 2006 Torino Olympic Winter Games and also participated in the 2002 Salt Lake City games. She is the first Canadian athlete to win two medals at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Groves is set to race in the upcoming ladies’ team pursuit events on Friday and Saturday.
