Skating season over on Rideau Canal

The 41st skating season on the Rideau Canal is officially over, the National Capital Commission announced Sunday morning.

Saturday’s downpour combined with Sunday’s higher temperatures and heavy snowfall threatened the integrity of the ice, according to the NCC’s website.

The high temperatures expected in the week ahead would also make it difficult to rebuild the thickness of the ice.

The 7.8 km rink opened on Jan. 8 and was open to skaters for a total of 53 days, 17 more than last year.
