Bank Street in the Glebe to be closed for construction

The Glebe portion of Bank Street will be closed beginning May 24 to accommodate a major reconstruction of the street.

Traffic will be shifted to O’Connor and neighbouring streets.

OC Transpo buses number 1 and 7 will be diverted along O’Connor Street in the Glebe. Southbound buses will take Isabella and O’Connor streets and Fifth Avenue before reconnecting with Bank Street. Northbound buses will follow a route along Holmwood Avenue, O’Connor, Strathcona Avenue, Metcalfe and Catherine streets.

The $22 million project will replace 100-year-old water and sewer pipes and rebuild the roadway, curbs and sidewalks between the Rideau Canal and the Queensway. The work will improve the drainage of waste water and storm water, replace lead pipes and feature an improved streetscape, with elements such as decorative street lights, more trees and public art.

A traffic safety plan will be implemented that includes crossing guards for children, a radar sign to slow speed of vehicles, and continued use of speed bumps.

All businesses along Bank Street will remain open. Free parking will be available during the construction period at Lansdowne Park when there is not an event taking place.
