Prison guards call for law to protect against disease

A block of O'Connor Street has been reopened following a protest by the federal prison guards' union.

The Union of Canadian Correctional Officers held a rally on Parliament Hill Thursday to launch a petition campaign calling for a new law requiring the disclosure of a prisoner's health information when guards are exposed to an inmate's urine, excrement or blood.

Members of the union met with politicians and set up information booths on the issue before setting off on a march.

Ottawa police closed roads temporarily as the crowd made its way to Bank and O'Connor streets.

The union says Correctional Service Canada won't give guards information about an inmate's health in incidents where corrections officers come into contact with a prisoner's bodily fluids, leaving them in the dark about whether they are at risk of contracting infectious diseases.
