No injuries in costly fire on Waverley Street

A two-alarm fire in a home just off Elgin Street caused between $300,000 and $400,000 in damages Monday afternoon.

“There were no injuries,” said Marc Messier, spokesperson for Ottawa Fire Services. “Both residents were not home at the time of the fire.”

Firefighters were called to 179 Waverly Street around 2 p.m. after pedestrians alerted two patrolling Ottawa police officers about the fire, Messier said.

The police officers broke into the three-storey home and searched the main floor for residents, but found no one. They were unable to make it to the second floor as smoke began to push them back.

Police re-opened Waverley Street between Elgin Street and Cartier Street at around 4:30 p.m.
