Another water main broke on Elgin Street Wednesday morning, leading to road closures and traffic disruptions during rush hour and possibly flooding businesses, according to police.
Originally installed in 1874 and currently connected to eight businesses, the water main broke around 8 a.m., leading to the closure of Elgin Street between Somerset Street West and Cooper Street, and Somerset Street West between Elgin and Metcalfe streets.
A city source said two businesses are without water, while the others haven’t been affected since they have access to other pipes.
Police have been directing traffic away from the area and blocked off a pedestrian sidewalk.
The roads are expected to be closed for the rest of the day while city crews repair the water main.
On Saturday, a damaged pipe forced business owners on Elgin Street to shut down their restaurants and bars because they didn’t have running water.
This is the third water main in the city, and the second on Elgin Street, to break in the past week.
