Police charge man after two bank robberies

Police have charged a man in connection with two bank robberies that took place in Ottawa earlier this month.

Michael Stead, 57, appeared in court Friday after being charged with two counts of robbery and one count of wearing a disguise for bank robbery that happened at a bank on Preston Street on Jan. 3, and another at a bank on Bank Street in south Ottawa on Jan. 19.

A man walked into the bank along the 2400 block of Bank Street Thursday night around 8 p.m., demanding money without a weapon and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money, Ottawa police said in a press release.

After witnessing a man fleeing by vehicle, police arrested the suspect without incident. The Ottawa Police Robbery Unit has since linked him to the bank robbery at 425 Preston Street.
