Ottawa residents gather on Parliament Hill before Earth Hour begins, March 31, 2012. The lights are about to flicker down for an hour to raise awareness for climate change.

It was lights out at 8:30 p.m. on March 31 when Earth Hour started. Hundreds of people gathered on Parliament Hill for a candlelight vigil to celebrate the annual event. Lights flickered off for one hour as the city participated in the worldwide event organized by the World Wildlife Fund. Businesses and households were encouraged to turn off all essential lights for one hour to raise awareness for climate change.
