A two-car collision in Centretown left one dead and two injured.

Police laid charges on Thursday against a 19-year-old man in relation to a fatal collision in downtown Ottawa early Wednesday morning.

Police have charged Adam Prevost with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, criminal negligence causing death, and failure to provide a breath sample, according to a police press release.

Prevost appeared in court Thursday.

The collision occurred around 4:00 a.m.

An Ottawa police cruiser was following a Honda Civic traveling westbound on Laurier Avenue West shortly before the Civic collided with a Kia Rondo at Bank Street and Laurier Avenue around 4:00 a.m.

The 54-year-old man driving the Kia was killed. Police took Prevost into custody at the scene, and said he was behind the wheel of the Civic.

Media reports initially said the occupants of the Civic were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police blocked off Bank Street from Gloucester to Slater streets and Laurier Avenue West from O’Connor to Kent streets for nearly 12 hours on Wednesday while investigating the crash.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit was called in to investigate the accident, as they are whenever a violent incident involves a police officer.

Pierrette Andrews lives nearby and says the accident, which sounded like an explosion, woke her up.

When she got down to the accident she says she saw firemen and paramedics performing CPR on the 54-year-old victim and another man handcuffed to a stretcher.
