Gilmour Street fire leaves over 12 homeless

Twelve to 15 people are homeless after an overnight fire on Gilmour Street, the Ottawa Citizen reports.

The fire, which affected three separate houses, caused about $2 million in damage.

Fire crews were called around 10 p.m. Sunday after the fire started at 546 Gilmour Street. When firefighters arrived on scene, the flames had already spread to the neighbouring building at 544 Gilmour Street.

540 Gilmour Street was also damaged in the fire.

The suspected cause of the fire is an unattended candle, said Marc Messier, a public information officer for Ottawa Fire Services, on Twitter.

Two residents were taken to hospital.  One of the patients was an 80-year-old man suffering respiratory problems unrelated to the fire, and the other was a woman suffering from smoke inhalation, Marc Messier told the Citizen.

Gilmour Street between Percy and Bay streets was closed overnight while firefighters responded to the flames. It reopened around 10 a.m. on Monday.
