Parts of Rideau Canal still closed

The Rideau Canal Skateway reopened to skaters this morning but remains closed between Dows Lake and Fifth Avenue.

The NCC says that overnight temperatures were not cold enough to make the ice safe for skating along the entire canal.

“It wasn’t as cold overnight as it was predicted, so the section that is not open just didn’t freeze properly," said NCC spokesperson Emily Keogh.

"As soon as it gets cold enough, we will open it,” Keogh said.

After closing because of above-average temperatures, the entire 7.8 kilometres of the Rideau Canal Skateway was set to reopen Thursday at 8 a.m. The skateway is open between Fifth Avenue and the National Arts Centre as planned.

Keogh said the NCC will reassess the area between Dows Lake and Fifth Avenue later this afternoon.

“I cannot guarantee that [the ice conditions] are perfect, but it is open,” said Keogh. The status of the ice and any closures are listed online on the NCC's website.
