Yesterday’s restaurant at the corner of Sparks and O’Connor streets is closing its doors for good tonight after 55 years in business.
Stan Ages, 71, sold the restaurant to a new owner looking to open a different eatery, according to CBC.
For more than a half a century the restaurant has been a dining hot spot for public servants and politicians working in the downtown core.
The building, which also houses the Centretown Tavern, was built in the 1870s and has a colourful history. It was there that Sir Thomas D’Arcy McGee, a journalist and one of the Fathers of Confederation, was assassinated in 1868.
Between 1880 and 1953 the building housed Bryson Graham, one of Ottawa’s oldest department stores.
After Bryson Graham closed down, Ages’ father opened Yesterday’s restaurant in 1959. The restaurant was initially called Sharry's after the owner’s sister, before being changed to Yesterday's a few years later.
Ages took over the restaurant when his father passed away in 2008.
