A collision with a light standard sent a driver and his SUV into the Rideau Canal late last night.
The accident occurred at roughly 11 p.m. just west of the Bank Street Bridge, north of the Glebe. Paramedics and police officers were able to pull the driver from his vehicle.
After the crash, a 61-year-old Ottawa man was charged with refusing to provide a breath sample.
A police media release says the vehicle was “resting in the Rideau Canal,” not specifying whether it was completely submerged in the crash, although images of the crash show it fully underwater.
The driver is currently recovering from minor injuries.
