Queen Street reopens to traffic after replacing outdated water main

The portion of Queen Street in between Elgin and Metcalfe streets reopened to traffic on Sept. 23 following the replacement of an old water main dating back to 1874.

The water main rehabilitation on Queen Street was part of the Ottawa on the Move initiative, which focuses on infrastructure renewal to prepare for LRT construction, according to a 2011 statement by Mayor Jim Watson.

The water main replacement “will help ensure the continued reliability and quality of the downtown water supply,” said a statement released on Sept. 23 by the City of Ottawa.

Other Ottawa on the Move projects include road resurfacing on Kent Street and creating cycling routes on O’Connor Street.
