Man beaten with hammer in ‘random’ attack

A 53-year-old man sustained severe head injuries after he was attacked with a hammer Tuesday evening.

The man was walking along Somerset Avenue near Bank Street around 6:30 p.m. when a male suspect attacked him and beat him on the head with a hammer, according to Ottawa Police, who described the attack as “random.”

The man was transported to hospital with serious, but not-life threatening injuries to his head and face, said police.

The suspect, who was also carrying a large kitchen knife in a plastic bag, escaped on foot.

He is described as a white male, approximately six-feet-two inches tall, 240 pounds and scruffy with a dark jacket and toque.
